Patriotism- A Dying Phenomenon

PatriotismYou may Google and come across a number of different definitions and interpretations of this single word. You could ask around your social circle and have different versions of the same phenomenon. But to me patriotism is not just limited to the very definition of the word. Patriotism may be taken as a feeling that every person should have for his or her country. Or an expression, which one needs to express time and time again to maintain the love for his/her country. Similarly It even might be a myth or a dying phenomenon as we move towards globalization.

Almost every Pakistani would claim to be a patriot but are we really patriots in its true definition? I fear the ratio of true patriots to the number of Pakistanis is getting pretty low. My analysis might be wrong and masses might disagree as they have every right to do so, it’s a democratic country after all (supposedly).
So what makes me have this rash overview of the Pakistanis of today, you might ask. Truth is, even I can’t answer that question as I don’t feel like a true patriot myself. But do I love my country? Yes I do have a strong affiliation with the country I was born in. Would I die for my country? Not really, but if the same question is asked while our national songs are on the speaker or our national team wins a match, my opinion might change. It's like finding solace for 2 minutes in the isolation of an enclosure where you have come to escape the reality of life. I love national holidays though, who doesn’t like a day off from the normal course of life.

I might be wrong in assuming the general youth having similar perception as mine, but I haven’t yet come across any event which might make me think otherwise. We all love to love Pakistan, as an expression. But I doubt if we really feel it most of the time. It’s like an unhealthy relationship, in which the three golden words have lost its meaning.

What’s the cause of this negativity? I’m uncertain about the answer, yet again . But do we really get a chance to be positive, is optimism still applicable in Pakistan or being so would be considered as a fool’s paradise. We have been on the news for quite some time now, and rarely for any good reason. But I don’t blame any of those events to be a major factor in this negativity, not even the government as I’m not willing to blame myself. The whole root of negativity is derived from the hypocrisy which lies within me. I don’t recall being thankful for being a national to an Islamic republic , I don’t even remember being gratified for any single blessing I have (without any personal effort from my end) . Am I taking everything for granted ? not sure , but still I have every right to complaint for all the things I could have had , since we are in a democratic country .

I might not be speaking for the masses but there would surely be a number of people out there who might be able to relate my curious state of mind . But sincerely I wish to be blessed with the true feeling of patriotism somehow , until then I’ll keep finding solace in the bliss of ignorance.

  1. A very well written article. I agree to some extent that our nation has some flaws but I do believe that whenever there were hard times, we always stood united as a nation and that proves our sense of patriotism and love for our beloved homeland.

  2. so true !! some where down the line we are lacking behind in this feeling. we easily indulge with other types of useless feelings and expressions but we ignore the fact that our country also dies every moment when we disrespect it. amazing piece of work.

  3. Well written.. We all go around saying that we love this country, but when the real time comes, we all step back! One of the reasons might be that our own government doesn't give us a platform.. Good work, inspiring! :)

  4. well conveyed message. We have seriously lost the feeling of being a true patriot. It's just a combination of some letters for us now. Well Done!

  11. A well executed article. It is an eye-opener for all those people who regard themselves as patriots, but are unaware of its 'real' meaning.

  14. The only way to serve Pakistan is that we must be sincere with out country. We must keep our personal interest behind and we must give supreme importance to the demands of our freedom. Country is not just a piece of land. It is not only the collection of mountains, rivers and valleys. It is the heritage of our dreams, aspirations, culture, traditions and our great religion. We love Pakistan because it is the centre of our hopes and future dreams. It is the land of our following generation. We must try to make it strong and undefeatable castle of Islam.

  20. This is surely an excellent thought written by usama nasir. it is a piece of writing which can easily arise feelings or should i say patriotic feelings for our country PAKISTAN. we really need to change this country. After all WE ARE THE POWER. IT S THE TIME TO STAND FOR THE NATION, QUAID MADE FOR US.....

  21. I criticize the publication of such things, which gives a bad message to the world about our relation with our country; a country which we got after sacrificing 600,000 people, most of whom didn't got even a proper burial. Rather than changing ourselves and our country, and getting rid of the masses exploiting our land, we are telling the world we aren't 'patriotic' in its true essence only because this country didn't give us what we deserved, as if we aren't responsible for the prevailing conditions.

  22. The article makes you realize the true essence of Patriotism. Pakistan is because of its people and we are responsible for its prevailing conditions. The need of the hour is to convert our patriotism on practical grounds. Nice thought provoking article Usama. Keep up the good work. You don't know your efforts can change someone's perception about his motherland...:)

  23. I can totally relate... when the colors are flying against the wind, and the anthem is playing, and I see the soldiers, I feel "patriotic." But then I see all the problems and all the injustices committed, and then I don't know what to think... And being a citizen of two countries just complicates my feelings even more, especially when there is a discord between them.

But the conclusion I've reached so far is that "patriotism" is really just a modern version of "tribalism." It's instinctive, and to an extent it serves a good purpose. But people sometimes see only a flag, and stop seeing the humanity, or in our case our brotherhood as Muslims, which is more important than anything else.

  24. On a positive note, I think the Arab-spring has helped re-unite Muslims all over the world in spirit. We feel their victories as our own, and their losses as our own. At least that's what I hope. I look forward to the day when we will all raise the same flag, regardless of origin, ethnicity, etc.

  25. *The way you pulled off this article was quite intresting not the usual kind of boring aspects we get to hear Thumbs Up for the effort*

  26. i second your thinking. i feel that most of the masses of the country must feel the same way as you do.. the number of truly patriotic Pakistanis is decreasing. but the reason for that is not us.. its what the generation before us handed the state of the country in.. us winning a cricket match or doing something big, its not our generation.. the generation before us is out there playing.. same way when we hear that Pakistan is getting famous for corruption, its not us, its the generation before us.. the have made us think the way we do now.. had they been good, our perception towards the country would have been different..
nobody likes to take the ownership of something faulty.. the same way we dont want to be patriotic to the country that has been destroyed by those before us..

  27. its a good thought provoking article. i completely agree with your opinion.

  28. Yes we surely have lost our sense of patriotism , you wont hear anyone saying much lets stay in Pakistan or move over to Pakistan, instead of trying to make it a better country, we try escaping the reality. Lets get immigrated is the harsh reality we live in!

  30. We are so deprived that we are dependent upon American Aid this thinking has led us in being Americans Slaves since we have lost the ability to think,to initiate to evolve as a patriot Pakistani.i must say a very thought provoking article Mr.Usama Nasir.

  33. You touched all the right notes about patriotism as there were. The feeling of it post a national event, the subsequent confusion about dying for the country right after those emotion-filled moments en masse. It has probably been this way circa 1947.
I really liked how you ended the article, Sam. - For only in ignorance can you find the bliss unless this is pondered over positively, by all. Very good work, indeed!
